Red Stripe

In 2006 while I was still working at The Economist Group a colleague, Mike Seery, told me about his idea to set up an innovation project called 'Red Stripe'. Mike was given six months, £100,000, six staff members and a small office away from the main Economist Group's offices. Their goal? To come up with 'the next big thing on the web'. I talked to Mike a lot about how he would run the project, how he would select the team and what help they might need.

This project not only opened up the possibility of the development of an innovative idea for the web, it also presented a rare opportunity for organisational learning. It struck me that a book should be written so that others could share the learning. Mike agreed, I introduced him to Gerard Fairtlough, founder of Triarchy Press, and we struck the deal.

Andrew Carey is the author of the book and he has done an excellent job of uncovering and unpicking the process that the team went through in the six months of the Project Red Stripe's life. The book charts the progress of the team and their ups and downs. It is also very informative and educational, and highly unusual in its structure.

If you fancy reading an entertaining and informative book about how teams work - the ups and downs, the joys, frustrations, chaos and triumphs - then get hold of a copy and have a read. You will learn about Project Red Stripe and a whole lot more.
